Medical Emergency Preparedness Exercise
Freeholder Vice-Director Ralph E. Sheets, Jr. and Freeholder Gerald Thornton announced that Cape May County successfully exercised its plan last week to deliver preventive medications to first responders in a public health emergency. Organized by the County Health Department and the Office of Emergency Management, the drill provided vials of medications to first responders in all 16 municipalities, Burdette Tomlin Memorial Hospital, Medical Reserve Corps volunteers, and county staff. The exercise lasted three days, August 9-11, 2006; however, the planning for the drill took several months.

According to Kevin Thomas, Acting Cape May County Health Officer, “In an emergency situation where it is necessary to provide medications to most of the county residents, we will use various methods to ensure that medications are dispensed as efficiently as possible. One of these methods is distributing medications to our first responders, in fire, police, Emergency Medical Services (EMS), Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) and Medical Reserve Corps (MRC) volunteers, etc., so that they can continue to serve the public without risk of infection.”
